ES desiccant bags for packaging and transport

ES desiccant bags and sachets are designed for B2B packaging, storage and transport applications where moisture-sensitive goods require additional protection against humidity. They are used inside cartons, boxes, export packaging and transport packaging to help reduce moisture-related risks during storage, handling and shipment. ES sachets are also known as desiccant packets, desiccant pouches or moisture absorber packets.

This type of desiccant solution is suitable for technical products, industrial components, spare parts, electronics, machinery elements and other goods that may be affected by increased humidity during the supply chain. ES sachets can be used in both land and sea transport, depending on the packaging system, transport route and expected exposure time.

Dietary supplements and food packaging. Small ES Basic Dry sachets, from 1 g to 10 g, are used in bottles and jars with capsules, tablets and powders, and in packs of dry food, to keep the contents dry and free-flowing.

Fill and sachet material

ES Basic Dry sachets bind water vapour from the air inside closed or semi-closed packaging. The envelope lets water vapour pass freely to the fill and keeps the granules inside.

Fill: calcined natural clay impregnated with calcium chloride.

Sachet material: breathable HDPE nonwoven (Tyvek type) on the back and PET/PE laminate on the front, heat-sealed.

Dust tightness: the envelope meets the dust-tightness requirements for type B desiccant bags under DIN 55473.

Water uptake capacity in a 40-day test at 25 °C: up to 21% of the initial weight at 20% RH, up to 32% at 40% RH and up to 100% at 90% RH. Under the same conditions (25 °C, 90% RH), narrow-pore silica gel takes up about 35% of its weight.

When saturated: the sachet does not swell or leak.

Compliance: free from dimethyl fumarate (REACH, Annex XVII, entry 61); meets Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS).

Marking: each sachet is printed with “Do not eat”.

HS code: 2508 40 00.

Origin: made in the EU.

Food contact

Food contact safety

ES Basic Dry sachets are intended for long-term storage at room temperature inside hermetically closed packaging of dry and dehydrated food and food supplements, whole, crushed or powdered, that require a water activity of aw ≤ 0.65. Direct contact with the food is permitted on both sides of the sachet.

PZH hygiene certificate: ES Basic Dry sachets hold hygiene certificate No F.FB.60412.218.2025 issued by the National Institute of Public Health PZH.

Declaration of conformity: we issue our own declaration of conformity for all fill weights, under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, Regulation (EC) No 450/2009 on active materials and Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice. It is based on migration testing of the complete sachet and is available on request.

The sachets are not intended for use with liquid food and must not be opened.

Chart: relative humidity measured for 58 hours with and without an ES Basic Dry sachet; without the sachet water condenses three times, with the sachet humidity drops to about 35%

Packaging desiccants: ordering and dosing questions

  • It depends on the pack and on how long it has to stay protected. We calculate the quantity following the approach of DIN 55474, which takes into account the inner volume of the pack, the water vapour permeability of the barrier, the moisture held in the goods and dunnage, and the storage time. To propose a sachet size and quantity, we need the following information:

    1. What product needs to be protected?
    2. How is it packed? If it is packed in film, what is the film thickness?
    3. What are the package dimensions?
    4. How long will the goods be stored or transported?
    5. What maximum moisture content or relative humidity is allowed inside the package?
    6. Is there any wood inside the film or package (pallet, crate, dunnage)? If so, what is its approximate weight?
  • Inside the moisture barrier (film bag, liner or sealed pack), close to the goods but not pressed against them, so that air can reach the sachet, especially its breathable nonwoven side. A sachet placed outside the barrier, for example between the film and the outer carton, absorbs moisture from the room or the transport space instead of from the air inside the pack.

In a large pack, spread the required quantity over several sachets in different places instead of using one large sachet in one spot, so that air from the whole pack can reach them. Do not place sachets where they carry the weight of the goods or touch sharp edges, as this can damage the envelope.

Take the sachets out of the collective bag just before packing and seal the barrier as soon as they are in place.

  • Keep them in the closed collective bag in a dry room at 5-30 °C. After opening the bag, keep unused sachets in an airtight container. Sachets left in open air start absorbing moisture before they reach your packaging, which reduces the capacity left for the goods. Shelf life is 2 years in unopened collective packaging.
